The bony vertebrae form a space in the center called the spinal canal. Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord, narrows. In most people narrowing of the spinal canal is due to arthritis, the “wear-and-tear” of cartilage and bone that comes with age – arthritis can cause the spaces between vertebrae to shrink or bone spurs to develop, which may put pressure on the spinal canal. Injury-induced trauma can also be associated with stenosis. If the canal is compressed, the nerves of the spinal cord may be pinched, resulting in pain and other symptoms. For more on spinal cord compression, see radiculopathy.
