Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF)

ALIF stands for Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion. This fusion surgery treats conditions affecting the lumbar spine. It is designed to treat lower back pain caused by the movement of the spinal vertebrae.

ALIF is a surgical procedure aimed at stabilizing your spinal cord by fusing multiple vertebrae together. This procedure is similar to TLIF and PLIF, except that it is done from the anterior (front) of the body, usually through an incision in the lower abdominal area, or on the side. Our minimally invasive approach preserves the muscles by giving access to the front of the spine through a very small incision. The abdominal organs, including the digestive tract, and other muscles are held to the side while the surgeon accesses the spinal cord. The intervertebral disc is then removed and replaced with a spacer and bone graft. The surgery is designed to fuse two or more of the vertebrae together, thereby reducing or eliminating pain caused by the vertebrae moving. Because the ALIF surgery approaches from the front of the body, there is reduced risk of damaging the nerves.
